Sea creatures, their existence and mortality in a natural cycle and their place in our diet are considered in new paintings from Mirra Whale and Deirdre Bean. In separate, complementary bodies of work they explore the traditions of still life and portraiture. Bean recalls her fisherman father and memories of the family table, where Whale eyes the present, explaining, “The paintings are about our ability to consume whilst often removing association. They are about finding a beauty and gratitude in the smallest gestures.”
