Tony Garifalakis, a Melbourne-based artist whose work is currently featured in the NGV exhibition Pleasure and Reality, has produced a highly textured, hand-printed screen print on denim fabric, a signature material often used in his work.
New Zealand-born, Melbourne-based artist Jess Johnson’s work employs distinct visual language – often inspired byscience fiction, parallel universes and comic books – the print features complex, hand-drawn patterning and fleshy, floating humanoids.
Gavin Bell, Jarrah de Kuijer and Simon McGlinn of Melbourne art collective Greatest Hits have produced the edition print Open Window 2015. The work is created via a subtractive process where UV light is passed through an image printed onto clear plastic, slowly degrading the surface pigment to reveal its visible inverse.
Irish artist Richard Mosse’s limited print-run posters, Nowhere to run, will be available exclusively for the duration of his exhibition ‘Richard Mosse: The Enclave’. Featuring an arresting, bright pink landscape, the poster is a still shot from Mosse’s original video work, capturing otherwise invisible wavelengths in vivid purple and crimson through infra-red film.
The flower is a repeated motif in Ai’s work, from his celebrated Sunflower seeds 2010 to a new installation, Blossom 2015, which features in the’ Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei’ exhibition. Blossom, comprising a large-scale bed of hundreds of delicate white flowers, embraces the tradition of Chinese porcelain and involves collaboration with the finest porcelain craftspeople in Jingdezhen, China.
Andrew Clark, NGV Deputy Director, said, “The NGV Artist Editions range gives art enthusiasts an opportunity to acquire accessible, highly collectible artwork from contemporary artists. We are delighted to support the work of artists both locally and from around the world in this series. One of the highlights of this summer’s range will be a porcelain peony flower sculpture created by significant contemporary artist Ai Weiwei, in a limited edition of 99.”
‘NGV Editions’ are available in-store at NGV International and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, as well as online. A signed, white peony sculptural artwork by Ai Weiwei will be released on 11 December in an edition of 99 to coincide with the opening of ‘Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei’. Ai’s sculptural flower is inspired by his monumental artwork Blossom 2015, which will be on display in the exhibition along with 300 works from the artist and Andy Warhol.
