A striking body of work by Girramay Traditional Owner John Murray, articulating personal experiences, traditional narrative and a continuing relationship to country.
Murray, who is physically disadvantaged, loves to tell stories and has found that making art allows him to better communicate with those around him. The very particular naive pictorial style and whimsical sculptures of ‘John’s Stories’ transform the traditional creation stories, passed down by the wiggy (old people). The paintings also bring to life stories from daily life; fishing, camping, living in the forest and family life. This exhibition also features an installation of the Bagu fire-spirit sticks, a strong set of sculptural forms.
