Strong black strokes, bold earthy tones and richly layered backgrounds characterise the work of Graham Fransella. Stripped of detail, Fransella’s paintings, prints and sculptures are highly symbolic, spontaneous and intuitive, reminiscent of pictograms and graffiti.
Fransella works intuitively, allowing any perceived meaning to emerge after the work is completed. His paintings and prints are boldly minimal, lying somewhere between abstraction and figuration. Torn between leaving and embracing his renowned ‘figure’, he has recently delved into landscapes, which continue to employ his topographical bold lines, but with a more abstract vocabulary.
